Position Description

A Postdoctoral Associate position is available in the Bagaitkar Lab and is funded by the COBRE grant (NIH) in the Oral Immunology and Infectious Disease research group at the School of Dentistry. The research focus of Bagaitkar lab is to understand the role of NADPH-derived oxidants in modulation of inflammatory responses in the oral mucosa. The phagocyte NADPH oxidase is a multi-subunit enzyme complex generates superoxide, which is rapidly converted to multiple forms of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Previous studies using from our lab along with others have demonstrated that independent of their anti-microbial nature, ROS are essential for the modulation a diverse set of cellular processes such as efferocytosis, LC-3 associated autophagy, antigen cross-presentation, and redox-regulation of a diverse set of inflammatory pathways. Mice lacking a functional NADPH oxidase exhibited hyper-inflammation characterized by a strong dysregulation of neutrophilic responses. Projects in the lab explore the specific role played by oxidants in regulating distinct pathways during the onset and resolution on inflammatory pathways in response to sterile endogenous ligands and oral bacteria.

To perform these interdisciplinary studies, we look for a highly motivated individual. Candidates must be a recent (or soon-to-be) Ph.D. graduate or a current postdoctoral fellow in microbiology/immunology/cell biology/biochemistry. The successful applicant will have a strong research background in cell and molecular techniques involved in immunology and/or microbiology. Previous experience with mammalian cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, PCR, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry is desirable. Eagerness/ability to learn computational methods, is also desirable.

The primary duties include:

  • Conduct research in the field of microbiology, immunology and molecular biology in consultation with the PI.
  • Organize data collection related to research projects. Coordinate and schedule research activities for research students and technicians.
  • Organize and perform statistical analysis of data generated from research projects.
  • Prepare written reports and documents pertaining to data management, research methodology, and study results.
  • Study research related journals, brief co-workers on findings related to projects.
  • Present and recommend new ideas for ongoing research.

Preferred skills include: flow cytometry, cell sorting, ELISA; blots; and a knowledge of basic concepts in microbiology/immunology.

Related work experience may include: Immunological and microbiological approaches to experimentation with emphasis on innate and adaptive immunity. Experience with animal models, maintenance of mouse colonies and genotyping; experience with isolation of primary mouse and human immune cells, various murine models of inflammation; knowledge of host-pathogen interactions; knowledge of flow cytometry, ELISA and other immunology techniques.

This position will have a mentor.
