Position Overview

This postdoctoral position in cancer-related research will focus on the use of multiple methodologies to investigate the role of cell signaling in tumor cell dissemination leading to metastatic seeding.  Central to the involved research will be the use of in vivo imaging approaches to detect, follow and predict seeding of cancer cells and mechanisms of immune suppression. Findings of the project will be used for the validation of conventional and experimental cancer immunotherapies. This research focuses upon prior studies regarding the mechanisms that tumor cells use to penetrate vascular structure and regulate trafficking of adaptive immune cells.  Using this information, the candidate will work with other scientists to develop in vivo imaging protocols that will predict tumor cell dissemination and immune suppression in cancer patients.  The position supports funded research into the mechanisms of cancer metastasis for breast, pancreas, and lung cancers.

Duties and Responsibilities

The candidate will be involved with Immunofluorescence/Immunohistochemical Imaging as well as Magnetic Resonance Imaging in preclinical (mouse) cancer models and patients.  The research will involve development of new mathematical and physical models predicting phenomena observed using intravital imaging at the microscopic level.  Adoption of MRI data acquisition approaches to detect the observed phenomena will build upon ongoing research showing sensitivity to the underlying tumor cell dissemination phenomena. The candidate should be capable of integrating this knowledge with cancer biology, and present it to peers, as well as compile manuscripts for publication.

The candidate:

-        Will work closely with physicians, physicists, chemists, molecular biologists, and others, to acquire cutting edge data

-        Will be involved in processing and interpretation of acquired data

-        Will be responsible for contributing to the writing of reports and scientific papers.

-        Will work directly with MRI data to test and evaluate new models of tumor cell interactions with vascular structures

-        Will work with MRI scientists to develop new imaging paradigms for monitoring vascular phenomena related to tumor dissemination.

-        Will process acquired MRI data using developed mathematical software packages.

Useful (helpful) Knowledge:

-        Understanding of imaging, microscopy, tissue management and fixation

-        Use of magnetic resonance imaging instrumentation

-        Use of Linux, Mac OSX and Windows software platforms

-        Use of Matlab or other mathematical modeling software

-        Familiarity with laboratory / physiology instrumentation

-        Mathematical modeling of permeability skills

-        Knowledge of cancer-related biology, and mouse anatomy and physiology

Experience and Education

Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Physiology, Cellular/Molecular Biology or related discipline with alternative relevant experience will be considered.  Ability to speak English fluently and work with a wide range of people (students, faculty and scientists). 

Compensation

The position is paid bi-weekly with benefits.  Salary will depend upon a combination of education and experience.  Salary range $67K to $100K.

Start date

The position will start on January 1st, 2023
