Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the University of Virginia

The Arandjelovic lab in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology & Center for Immunity, Inflammation & Regenerative Medicine at the University of Virginia is seeking a post-doctoral Research Associate to join the team studying cell clearance/phagocytosis in inflammation, with focus on arthritis models. Apoptotic cells are frequently observed at sites of ongoing inflammation, and inefficient clearance of apoptotic cells can lead to secondary necrosis and the release of their cellular contents, which can further fuel the inflammatory process. However, the nature of dying cells, the cellular identity of phagocytes and the molecular events that contribute to clearance of apoptotic cells have been understudied in many inflammatory diseases, including arthritis. In other words, “who” are the cleaning crew and which “tools” are they using?

In the Arandjelovic lab, we focus on addressing the following questions:

  1. Who are the phagocytes in the healthy and inflamed joints?
    1. What are they “eating” (infiltrating leukocytes, tissue resident cells)?
    2. Does modulation of cell clearance pathways impact disease parameters? These studies will identify new modulators of inflammatory and autoimmune disease and uncover novel pathways that can be targeted for therapeutic benefit.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Qualified applicants must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. in Immunology, Cell Biology, Physiology or a related field before the start date. The candidate is expected to have at least one first-authored publication in a peer-reviewed journal, and demonstrated skills must include the use of techniques in cell and molecular biology such as cell culture, functional, biochemical and cell-based assays. Extensive experience in basic immunology, flow cytometry, and microscopy is required. Experience with big data set analyses is preferred. The ability to work independently, as well as interact with diverse groups of scientists and students is essential. This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.
